Christianity was introduced to the East African coast of what is now Tanzania through Portuguese
explorers and Catholic missionaries in the sixteenth century. From the mid-nineteenth century
onward—especially in the 1860s—missionary work expanded significantly. In this sense, the church in
Tanzania has a history of roughly 150–160 years, and recent surveys indicate that about 60% of
Tanzania’s population identifies as Christian.
Yet many remain concerned that the church may not take deep root in God’s Word, like seed
sown along the path, and may become vulnerable to deception.
Many pastors have not received sufficient training in Scripture interpretation and preaching.
After only limited preparation, some are ordained, plant churches, and begin pastoral ministry. In some
cases, limited theological discernment leads leaders to participate in heterodox gatherings without
carefully testing whether the teaching aligns with orthodox doctrine.
For these reasons, UATST prioritises theological education and continuing training that
strengthens biblical interpretation and faithful teaching and embodiment of biblical truth. A pastor who
stands firm is crucial for the health of the Church.
Through your studies at UATST, we pray that you will be deeply rooted in Christ and the gospel,
built up on that foundation, and strengthened to serve the Church to the glory of God the Father.
